Brandon Mebane was drafted by the Seahawks in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft and went on to become a key performer on the legendary “Legion of Boom” defensive units that elevated the team to two Super Bowls. The defensive tackle spent nine seasons in Seattle, working the first four years of his career at left defensive tackle before he was moved over to right defensive tackle for the next five seasons.
In his rookie campaign, Mebane started 10 games, and in his second year, he registered career bests of 5.5 sacks and nine tackles for a loss. His “Belly Roll” sack celebration, which he cited MC Hammer as an inspiration for, became one of the fans’ favorite post-play routines.
Mebane was a dependable mainstay on the Seahawks’ defensive line, playing in 16 games in five of his first seven seasons. He registered career highs of 56 combined tackles in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. For his dependability, Mebane was eventually rewarded with being a trusted force on the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl winning team, as he anchored the interior during the Super Bowl XLVIII season.
From 2012 to 2015, with Mebane as a stout presence, the Seahawks defense led the NFL in scoring defense in every season, becoming the only team in the Super Bowl era to pull off that feat. He was a player who was carried over from the pre-Pete Carroll era who found his place as a pillar of one of the greatest defenses in NFL history.
“He's an immovable object out there,” former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman told ESPN.com. "He's an incredibly technical player in his movements and everything he does. He's rarely out of position and he's rarely out of the play.”
Mebane played nine seasons with Seattle, and finished his Seahawks career with 125 starts in 131 games played. He totaled 15.5 sacks and 349 tackles and became an established veteran leader during the most memorable era in Seahawks history.
“I think he’s one of the better nose tackles in the game,” said former Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril. “Heck of ballplayer and he leads by example. The defense starts with him.”
