A second-round pick in John Schneider and Pete Carroll’s first draft in Seattle, Tate had a relatively quiet first two seasons before becoming a key part of Seattle’s offense in 2012, catching 45 passes for 688 yards and seven touchdowns, one of which will go down in Seahawks history, a game-winning, contested catch of a Russell Wilson Hail Mary in a Monday night win over the Packers.
In 2013, Tate led the Super Bowl-winning team with 898 yards on 64 catches and added five touchdowns. His 80-yard touchdown catch at St. Louis that season—a play known not just for an impressive catch over a defensive back, but also the 30 or so yards of taunting he did on the way into the end zone—is tied for the sixth-longest touchdown catch in team history. Tate was also a standout punt returner, that year, leading the NFC with 585 yards on 51 returns, a season total that ranks second in team history behind Nate Burleson’s 658 yards in 2007. His career 11.6 yards-per-punt return average also ranks second in team history behind Charlie Rogers’ 12.7 average.
